Society’s need to look and feel super-human (or simply not be overweight), has created an fitness craze that leaves consumers wanting to look good for no particular reason. When I say that, I mean that many people simply do cardio or lift heavy weights so they can look and feel good, plain and simple. However, in my mind it doesn’t make sense to train so hard only to look good if you’re not going to put your physical talents to good use. Train for something!
Scorpion Plank Twist
Ladies, the Scorpion Plank Twist will pump up your Boleos and any other quick adornments you ever dreamed about performing with lightning-quick accuracy.
For those of you who haven’t yet found a reason to experience the back-breaking break-through P90X video series, get ready to use it for Tango! I’m sure when Tony Horton, the mouth of P90X, initially launched the innovative home-fitness series, he had no idea how people would apply the program or which sport-specific benefits it would have. The truth is, no matter which sport or activity you practice, P90X has little pearls of wisdom that apply to all areas of fitness, including the Argentine Tango.
The Discus Thrower
Men, the Discus Thrower will give you the strength and control you’ve been craving in your core for those long-winded grapevines. Round and round she goes!
Constantly confusing the body by performing different exercises and movements will train it to move on the fly. In essence, to challenge your range of motion and strength will create a physical body that has an attitude of I have no boundaries! If you currently struggle with certain movements in your Tango dancing and, no matter how much you practice, you can’t seem to improve, maybe it’s time you moved differently. Maybe you’re still in the beginning stages of learning the unfamiliar movements of the dance, but I’m saying that attempting movements your body is not used to may, in fact, loosen up your internal wiring and make your goals easier to reach.
X-Tap
Both men and women will feel more secure and balanced on one leg after doing the wacky x-taps!
I’ve been studying one P90X program in particular called P90X Abs / Core Plus to discover what benefits it can provide to my Tango dancing. My discoveries are simple and effective as this program focuses on the core of the body – abs, hips, lower chest area, upper thigh, and lower back – which undoubtedly improves a person’s performance in all areas of life, let alone in Tango. It’s only 22 minutes long and by the end you’ll be smiling and scoffing at the TV screen (and wishing Tony would shut up even though you secretly love hearing his commentary).
The Hanging Pelvic Tilt
The Hanging Pelvic Tilt improves balance and helps with strengthening your core to improve timing when walking.
I don’t work for the Beachbody Corporation, but I do use and totally advocate their products and workout philosophy. For only $29.99, this program is a steal, people! I highly recommend that you buy a copy or checking out a friend’s copy to see why I’m so excited about everything P90X-related. Before I go, here’s a sample video I found on Yahoo! of the last minute or so of this program in the series. Grab the popcorn (low-fat, of course) and click play!
Keep dancing,
Panayiotis Pete Karabetis
